Always.<\/p>\n<p>Community theatres and amateur productions usually don&#8217;t even consider hiring a fight director or having a props master who has lots of experience working with guns. The actor who was shot was even a veteran&#8230; he should know haw to safety a gun.  The important thing is to designate someone such as an Assistant Stage Manager whose responsibility it is to have all props ready before each rehearsal and performance. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ready&#8221; means&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in its preset position,\n<li>swords are blunt and free of burrs,\n<li>firearms are safe (PROVE it), then loaded with the appropriate blanks\n<\/ul>\n<p>If no one is assigned this responsibility, professional or not, accidents happen.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a good way to train yourself in firearm safety:<\/p>\n<h2>PAL\/Stage and Screen Firearm Safety Course<\/h2>\n<p>(PAL &#8211; Possession and Acquisition Firearm License)<br \/>\nThis is a \u2018must\u2019 course for actors, directors, and stage managers. Its depth and focus on the entertainment industry make it the only one of its kind in Ontario. For liability and safety reasons, it is best practice for all theatre companies to have a licensed PAL holder on staff if firearms or replica firearms are being used in a production.<\/p>\n<p>Rapier Wit\u2019s Possession and Acquisition License Course will give participants the opportunity to earn their firearm licenses while training in safe and effective performance techniques for stage and film. This unique course takes three days to complete with over twenty hours of training and testing in non-restricted, restricted firearms, and prohibited devices.<\/p>\n<p>Class dates are:<\/p>\n<p>Saturday February 28 9 AM \u2013 6 PM<br \/>\nSunday March 1 9 AM \u2013 6 PM<br \/>\nSaturday March 7 10 AM \u2013 3 PM<\/p>\n<p>$505 (includes GST)*<br \/>\n$388.50 for members of Rapier Wit, FDC, ACTRA, Equity, and IATSE<br \/>\nIf paid in full before Monday February 9th<\/p>\n<p>PAL portion taught and examined by Canadian Firearms Safety Course Instructors Greg Jacobs and David Kwok Stage and Screen practical course taught on the third day by FDC certified Fight Director and Instructor Daniel Levinson \u2013 Times and instructors subject to change<\/p>\n<p>Tuition covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-restricted firearm textbook, training and testing\n<li>Restricted firearm textbook, training and testing\n<li>Stage and screen combat-specific topics: safety, aesthetics, choices in blank ammunition, experience firing various blank firearms both long arms as well as handguns, and instruction in stage and screen combat performance scenarios.\n<\/ul>\n<p>Space is limited. A $100 non-refundable deposit is needed to hold a space.<\/p>\n<p>*There is an additional $80 that must be paid directly to the Canadian Government for the Possession and Acquisition License.
