I recommend this format for any study group, but encourage anyone new to Bartitsu to seek out an instructor with experience before gathering a group of friends to try it out.<\/p>\n<p>The monthly format is this:<br \/>\nWeek 1: Jujitsu<br \/>\nWeek 2: Pugilism<br \/>\nWeek 3: Savate<br \/>\nWeek 4: Walking stick<\/p>\n<h2>Jujitsu<\/h2>\n<p>The first week of the month, students should focus on the primary strategies of Bartitsu which come from traditional jujitsu.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2-hour class, this is the schedule:<br \/>\n00-10: General warm up<br \/>\n10-15: Break falls (appropriate to each student&#8217;s level)<br \/>\n15-30: Review fundamentals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Outward wrist lock<\/li>\n<li>Arm bar<\/li>\n<li>Come-along hold<\/li>\n<li>Figure-four takedown<\/li>\n<li>Back-heel throw<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>30-75: Review and development of level-appropriate technique.<br \/>\nGreen Sash will review of all jujitsu lessons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Head locks, neck cranks and escapes<\/li>\n<li>Lever throw and scooping ankle throw<\/li>\n<li>Collar and Elbow tactics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blue Sash will review all jujitsu categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hip throws: Major hip throw, shoulder throw, drop throw<\/li>\n<li>Other takedowns: Spring hip throw, scissors takedown, sacrifice throws<\/li>\n<li>Locks and holds: lock flow, kimura, and head cradle takedown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>75-110: One or more of the following explorations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sparring<\/li>\n<li>inventing or reviewing combinations that integrate all aspects of Bartitsu<\/li>\n<li>self-defence scenarios, emphasizing jujitsu responses<\/li>\n<li>learning from the Bartitsu Compendium or other legitimate sources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>110-120: Cool down and stretching<\/p>\n<h2>Pugilism<\/h2>\n<p>The second week of the month, students should focus on the most common unarmed attacks: punches. The pragmatic defences and powerful strikes of bare-knuckle boxing are the best way to close distance until a jujitsu takedown is possible.<\/p>\n<p>A 2-hour class should follow this schedule:<br \/>\n00-10: General warm up<br \/>\n10-15: Medicine ball throw\/catch or skipping rope or shadow boxing<br \/>\n15-30: Review fundamentals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead punch<\/li>\n<li>Cross punch<\/li>\n<li>Slips<\/li>\n<li>Milling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>30-75: Review and development of level-appropriate technique.<br \/>\nGreen Sash will review of all pugilism lessons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hooks and uppercuts<\/li>\n<li>Elbow block and Chopper<\/li>\n<li>Lead hand parries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blue Sash will review all pugilism categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strikes: Supinated punches, pronated and over-pronated punches, edges and elbows<\/li>\n<li>Pummeling and follow-ups<\/li>\n<li>Guards: Palm-up and turtle-shell, palm-down blocks, bob-and-weave<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>75-110: One or more of the following explorations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sparring<\/li>\n<li>inventing or reviewing combinations that integrate all aspects of Bartitsu<\/li>\n<li>self-defence scenarios, emphasizing pugilistic responses<\/li>\n<li>learning from the Bartitsu Compendium or other legitimate sources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>110-120: Cool down and stretching<\/p>\n<h2>Savate<\/h2>\n<p>The third week of the month, students should practice the most difficult and powerful attacks within Bartitsu: kicks. Savate was the original source of all kicks in Bartitsu and integrates perfectly with pugilism.<\/p>\n<p>A 2-hour class should follow this schedule:<br \/>\n00-10: General warm up<br \/>\n10-15: Leg swings<br \/>\n15-30: Review fundamentals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shin kick<\/li>\n<li>Evading kicks<\/li>\n<li>Knee strikes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>30-75: Review and development of level-appropriate technique.<br \/>\nGreen Sash will review of all savate lessons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Round kick<\/li>\n<li>Side Kick and chasse<\/li>\n<li>Stop-kick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blue Sash will review all savate categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead leg: Snap kick, hook kick, fouette<\/li>\n<li>Rear leg: Front kick, switch-side kick, crescent kick<\/li>\n<li>Spin kicks: Back-kick, spin hook kick, spin crescent kick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>75-110: One or more of the following explorations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sparring (purring)<\/li>\n<li>inventing or reviewing combinations that integrate all aspects of Bartitsu<\/li>\n<li>self-defence scenarios, emphasizing savate responses<\/li>\n<li>learning from the Bartitsu Compendium or other legitimate sources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>110-120: Cool down and stretching<\/p>\n<h2>Walking Stick<\/h2>\n<p>The fourth week of the month sees the quintessential tool of Bartitsu: the walking stick or cane.<\/p>\n<p>A 2-hour class should follow this schedule:<br \/>\n00-10: General warm up<br \/>\n10-15: Indian clubs<br \/>\n15-30: Review fundamentals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bayonet form blocks and the bayonet drill of attacks<\/li>\n<li>Striking and guarding in high guard<\/li>\n<li>Preemptive strike from rear guard with follow-ups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>30-75: Review and development of level-appropriate technique.<br \/>\nGreen Sash will review of all walking stick lessons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bayonet form jujitsu<\/li>\n<li>Outside guard<\/li>\n<li>Using the crook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blue Sash will review all walking stick categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Le Boucher drills<\/li>\n<li>Reverse-grip and two-handed strikes, blocks and jujitsu<\/li>\n<li>Other self-defence weapons: kubotan\/knife, Bowie knife, Escrima\/Kali sticks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>75-110: One or more of the following explorations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sparring<\/li>\n<li>inventing or reviewing combinations that integrate all aspects of Bartitsu<\/li>\n<li>self-defence scenarios, emphasizing weapon responses, especially from an unready posture<\/li>\n<li>learning from the Bartitsu Compendium or other legitimate sources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>110-120: Cool down and stretching<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the benefit of Academie Duello students who are continuing their pursuit of Bartitsu without an instructor present, I provide this outline.
